For our final, our project was very similar to our first mobile journalism project. We interviewed a teacher and learned about his class. For us, our class was intro to engineering and design. We learned a lot about the class as a whole and got to meet and talk to the kids and teachers who took the class. Instead of using an iPad like we did in our first project, this time we used a tripod and video camera. We also used final cut pro instead of iMovie. It was difficult thinking of questions to ask the teacher and to figure out what b-roll to use for this project. I enjoyed making this video for the final as I was able to learn more about the tripod, interviewing, and b-roll again. Overall, I probably would have gotten more b-roll so I could have more to choose from but I thought my partner and I did a great job on this project.

During this headline newscast project, we created a news brief including stories that were about national, local, international, sports, weather, and Ladue stories that were both interesting to us and to a wide scale of people. This became pretty difficult as some news stories were interesting to us but wouldn't have been interesting to other people. However, we were able to find stories that were very intriguing to us and others. For me, the most fun part was writing the script. I enjoyed putting the pieces of the puzzle together from our research. When we presented our headline newscast project as anchors, my group and I worked on the techniques of an anchor that Mr. Goble taught us. This took a lot of practice and a lot of hard work. I personally had trouble moving my head to show personality. This was something I could have worked on a little more. Overall, I enjoyed the headline newscast project. It taught me a lot about researching for video journalism, presenting, and anchoring.
I learned through my project about Crossfit, a physical training program to improve overall condition of all, that anyone can do it and you don't just have to be fit to be a cross-fitter when starting. I also learned about the different foods cross fitters eat. They eat lean meats, lots of fruits and vegetables, and a lot of protein. The stay away from processed foods and others that have too much sodium. Crossfit is a lifestyle that takes over these peoples life in a good way as it keeps them healthy, happy, and active. As I don't have to do crossfire with my sports, I am very interested in doing it later in my life as it is fast paced and has shown a lot of improvement in all different types of people.
Editing is one of the most important aspects when it comes to broadcast technology. If you edit well and have good sound bites, the viewer will feel connected to the project and there's a better chance it will be successful. If the sound bites are too large and you don't edit them well enough, the viewer will not feel connected and will lose focus.
When interviewing, it's important to have the interviewee to be in one of the thirds on the screen. In addition, it looks weird if the interviewee is looking right at the camera. This will look sloppy and not high quality. it is important to hold the camera aligned over your shoulder so the interviewee looks at your eyes and not the camera. Also, it is important to be at the same level as your subject when interviewing because you don't want to get the impression that the interviewer is more important than the interviewee.
Sound is a very important part when it comes to Broadcast Technology. When it comes to taping, if the sound isn't loud enough, the video will become confusing to the viewer and won't make sense. If it's too loud, it will again not make sense and confuse the viewer. Sound brings visual images to life. It is important to use the natural sound in the environment to help get the most out of your project or story. When choosing which sounds to use, its best to use the best sounds and to choose what will go best with your story. Overall, sound can make or break a project, so it is important to choose the right sound, use the best sound, and use the right amount of sound.
As I said in my past blog, getting the viewers emotionally involved is extremely important. I used the example of ESPN and how they show a reaction for every action. This demonstrates the importance placed on the emotional side of hooking the viewer. This shooting tip (action to reaction) is one of the most important parts of broadcast video.
There are many other important concepts for shooting. But some of the them include finding a spot with good lighting and sound, having the proper equipment to do what you want to do, and hold iPad with finger tips on side so you don't get tired. Visual Storytelling is an interesting way of showing news. It is growing tremendously in one area but declining in another. For example, a lot of news is seen through websites online. The online media is growing as most news is moving to mobile sites. Although visual storytelling is becoming easier and easier, some of the oldest visual storytelling that is starting to decline is the newspaper and magazines. For example many sports stories use to be shown through magazines and sports news through the magazines. But as we advance, online visual storytelling is easier to access as its right at our finger tips.
There are many ideas and themes in these articles, but two messages that stick out to me are that citizen journalism is reporting information in anyway and anyone can be a citizen journalist. Citizen journalism isn't just TV or the newspaper. It can be a blog, a podcast editorial, or even social media. As long as it includes either text, pictures, video, or audio and is shared with the public, it counts as citizen journalism. This also proves that anyone can be a citizen journalist as long as you have something to say.
